Preparing Clothes for Donation

Preparing clothing properly increases the likelihood that it will be used rather than discarded. Most organizations request that donated items be clean and in wearable condition. This doesn't mean clothing must look brand new—gently worn items are perfectly acceptable. Items with visible stains, rips, or broken zippers are typically rejected and may end up in landfills anyway.

Before donating, inspect each item carefully. Look for stains on armpits, necklines, and hems where damage is common. Check zippers, buttons, and seams for functionality. If a shirt has a small stain that would wash out, washing it before donation is helpful. If a seam is coming loose but otherwise the garment is sound, many organizations accept these items and can perform minor repairs.

Include items on hangers when possible, though this isn't required at most locations. If donating multiple items, folding or hanging them neatly takes little time and shows respect for the organizations receiving them. Some people bag items by category—professional wear separate from casual clothes, for example.

Consider the season when donating large quantities. Winter coats and heavy sweaters are most useful during fall and winter months. Summer items like t-shirts and shorts are more useful during warmer seasons. However, most organizations accept donations year-round and maintain inventory for changing needs.

Remove personal items from pockets and check for anything left inside. Take off security tags if present. Some donors include sizing labels or brief notes about items (like "machine washable" or "no shrink"), which can be helpful but isn't necessary. Don't
