Learn About Blocking Your Phone Number On Calls

Understanding Phone Number Blocking Basics

Blocking your phone number on outgoing calls is a feature that prevents the person receiving your call from seeing your phone number on their caller ID display. When you block your number, the recipient typically sees "Unknown," "Blocked," "Private," or "Restricted" instead of your actual phone number. This feature has legitimate uses and is available through most phone carriers and devices in the United States and many other countries.

The technology behind number blocking works through your phone carrier's switching systems. When you initiate a call with blocking enabled, a signal is sent to your carrier's network instructing it to withhold your number information from the receiving party's phone system. This happens before the call even connects to the recipient's device. The blocking occurs at the network level, not just on your phone, which is why it's more reliable than simply hiding your number on your device display.

Different types of phone services handle blocking differently. Traditional landline phones may use one method, while cellular phones use another. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, which transmit calls through the internet rather than traditional phone lines, have their own blocking mechanisms. Understanding which type of service you use helps you know what blocking options are available to you.

The history of number blocking dates back to the 1980s when Caller ID technology first became widespread. As privacy concerns grew, telecommunications regulators began requiring carriers to offer ways for callers to block their numbers. This led to the development of the blocking features we use today. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States has established rules about how carriers must implement these features.

• Blocking is a standard feature offered by virtually all phone carriers
• The blocked number signal travels through your carrier's network infrastructure
• Different phone types may have different blocking methods available
• Blocking has been a regulated feature for several decades
• The feature works across most phone systems in North America

Practical Takeaway: Phone number blocking is a legitimate, carrier-supported feature that works at the network level. Knowing how it functions helps you understand what to expect when you use it on your calls.

How to Block Your Number on Individual Calls

The most common way to block your number on a single call is to use the star-sixty-seven code (*67) on a landline or mobile phone. This code tells your phone carrier to suppress your phone number from displaying on the recipient's caller ID for that one call only. The process is straightforward: you dial *67, wait for a tone, then dial the phone number you want to call. The recipient will see a blocked number, but the call will go through normally.

On most smartphones, you can also access blocking options through the phone's call settings. For iPhones, you navigate to Settings, then Phone, then Show My Caller ID. Toggling this off prevents your number from showing on outgoing calls. On Android devices, the steps vary by manufacturer, but generally you go to Settings, then Call Settings, then Additional Settings, then Caller ID, and select "Hide number" or "Network default."

When using *67, it's important to note that the feature may not work on certain types of calls. Emergency calls (911 in the United States) cannot have blocked numbers—emergency services receive your number regardless of your blocking settings. Additionally, some businesses and government agencies have systems that automatically reject calls from blocked numbers. Toll-free numbers (800, 888, 877, 866 prefixes) may also reject calls with blocked numbers because these services often need to identify incoming calls for billing purposes.

The success of call blocking depends on your phone carrier's infrastructure and the receiving party's phone system capabilities. Some older phone systems may not properly recognize blocked numbers. If a call fails to connect when you use *67, you can try calling again without the blocking code, or you can contact your carrier to understand why the block isn't working.

• Use *67 before the phone number to block on a single call
• Smartphone settings allow you to hide your number in your phone's call settings
• Emergency calls (911) cannot be blocked
• Some businesses automatically reject blocked calls
• Toll-free numbers may have trouble accepting blocked calls
• Repeat attempts without blocking may be necessary if a blocked call fails

Practical Takeaway: You have two main options for blocking individual calls: dialing *67 or adjusting your phone's settings. Know which method works best with your specific phone type.

Blocking Your Number for All Outgoing Calls

If you want your number blocked on all your outgoing calls rather than just individual calls, you can set your phone or account to block your number by default. This is called "per-line blocking" or "permanent blocking" and is configured through your phone carrier's settings or your phone's built-in options. Once enabled, every call you make will appear as blocked unless you specifically unblock it for a particular call.

To set up permanent blocking on a landline, you typically call your phone carrier's customer service number and request that they enable blocking on your account. The carrier's representative will configure this setting in their system, and within a few minutes to a few hours, all your outgoing calls will show as blocked. This service is usually free, though some carriers may charge a small monthly fee. You should confirm whether your carrier charges for this service before requesting it.

On mobile phones, the process varies. For AT&T customers, you can dial *31# to enable permanent blocking, or #31# to disable it. For Verizon, you use *67 each time you want to block a call, but there isn't a universal permanent blocking feature built into all Verizon phones—you may need to contact Verizon directly or use a third-party app. T-Mobile allows you to dial *31# to enable blocking. Sprint users should contact customer service. These codes work on many carriers, but results vary, so checking with your specific carrier ensures accuracy.

One important consideration with permanent blocking is that it affects your ability to conduct business in certain contexts. If you regularly call businesses that need to identify you—such as banks, insurance companies, or service providers—those businesses may not accept calls from blocked numbers. You may need to unblock your number for those calls or use a different method of contact. Additionally, if you apply for jobs or services that may call you back, using permanent blocking could mean you miss return calls from organizations that don't call back to blocked numbers.

• Contact your carrier to set up permanent number blocking on your account
• Dial *31# on many carriers to enable permanent blocking from your phone
• Dial #31# to disable permanent blocking on carriers that support this code
• Carrier fees for permanent blocking vary—confirm cost before enabling
• Permanent blocking may prevent businesses from contacting you back
• You can temporarily unblock your number for specific calls when needed

Practical Takeaway: Setting up permanent blocking requires contacting your carrier or using feature codes on your phone. Understand your carrier's specific process and consider whether permanent blocking suits your calling needs.

Unblocking Your Number When Needed

There are situations where blocking your number may not be appropriate or may cause problems with the call going through. Understanding how to unblock your number for specific calls ensures you can reach people and services that require your number to be visible. The method for unblocking depends on whether you use temporary (*67) blocking or have set up permanent blocking on your account.

If you use temporary *67 blocking for individual calls, you don't need to do anything special to unblock—simply make calls without dialing *67 first, and your number will display normally. If you have set up permanent blocking on your account, you'll need to use a code to unblock for specific calls. The code is typically *31# (dial this before the number you want to call with your number visible). On some carriers, you may need to dial 1131 before the phone number instead. The exact code depends on your carrier and phone type.

When you need to unblock for a call, do so for situations like calling your bank or credit card company, contacting medical offices, reaching government agencies, or calling potential employers. These organizations often need to identify the caller for
