Your Free Guide to Georgia License Tag Renewal

Understanding Georgia License Tag Renewal Requirements

Georgia license tags (also called license plates or vehicle registration tags) must be renewed on a regular schedule to keep your vehicle legal to drive on public roads. The Georgia Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division manages tag renewals for all registered vehicles in the state. Each vehicle receives a renewal notice that tells you when your current tag expires, and this date appears on the physical tag itself as a month and year.

Your tag renewal is tied to your vehicle's registration, which is a separate document from your driver's license. When you own or operate a vehicle in Georgia, you must register it with the state. This registration creates a record linking you, your vehicle, and your tag. The renewal process involves updating this registration record and receiving a new physical tag to display on your vehicle.

Georgia law requires that your tag remain visible and readable on your vehicle at all times. The tag must be mounted on the front and rear of your vehicle, and the numbers and letters must not be obscured by dirt, damage, or covers. Driving with an expired tag can result in a traffic citation and fine. Renewing your tag before the expiration date keeps you compliant with state law.

The renewal timeline varies depending on when your vehicle was originally registered. Some vehicles renew on a one-year cycle, while others renew on a two-year cycle. Your renewal notice will specify which schedule applies to your vehicle. The notice is typically mailed to the address on file with your registration about 45 to 60 days before your tag expires, giving you time to complete the renewal.

Practical Takeaway: Check your current tag to find the expiration date (month and year shown on the tag itself). Look for your renewal notice in the mail 45 to 60 days before that date. Keep your registration documents in your vehicle along with your driver's license.

Methods to Renew Your Georgia License Tag

Georgia offers multiple ways to renew your license tag, giving you flexibility based on your preference and circumstances. Each method has different requirements and takes different amounts of time to complete. Understanding your options helps you choose the method that works best for your situation.

The online renewal method through the Georgia Department of Revenue website allows you to renew your tag from your computer, tablet, or smartphone. To renew online, you will need your renewal notice (which contains specific information required to access the system), your vehicle identification number (VIN), your driver's license number, and a valid payment method such as a credit card or debit card. Online renewal typically processes quickly, and you can often pay and complete the transaction in just a few minutes. However, the new physical tag will still need to be mailed to you, which usually takes 5 to 7 business days after your payment is processed.

Renewing in person at a county tag office (also called a Department of Revenue office) is another option. Every Georgia county has at least one tag office where you can bring your vehicle and documents to renew your tag. You will need to bring your renewal notice, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and a valid form of identification. Some counties also offer mobile tag offices that visit different locations throughout the month. Renewing in person means you receive your physical tag immediately, allowing you to drive legally with the new tag right away. This method is useful if your renewal deadline is very close or if you prefer to handle the transaction face-to-face.

Some Georgians use mail-in renewal by sending their renewal notice and payment to the address specified on the notice. This method requires no trip to an office or computer access, but it takes longer than other methods because the mail delivery time is added to the processing time. Mail-in renewal typically takes 7 to 10 business days after the Georgia Department of Revenue receives your payment.

Third-party tag agents, which are licensed businesses throughout Georgia, also process tag renewals. These are often located at places like auto service shops or retail stores. Using a tag agent is convenient because they are often located near your home or workplace, and they can complete your renewal while you wait. However, tag agents typically charge a small service fee in addition to the renewal fee charged by the state.

Practical Takeaway: Choose online renewal if you need a quick transaction and don't mind waiting for mail delivery. Choose in-person renewal at a county tag office if you need your tag immediately. Choose mail-in renewal only if your deadline allows several weeks. Consider a tag agent if you want convenience and don't mind paying a small extra fee.

Documents and Information You Will Need

Gathering the right documents before you start your renewal process makes the transaction faster and prevents delays. The documents required depend on whether you are renewing a standard tag or if your vehicle has special circumstances, such as being financed through a loan or recently purchased.

Your renewal notice is the primary document you will need. This notice is mailed by the Georgia Department of Revenue to the address on file with your registration. The notice contains important information such as your renewal identification number, your vehicle's VIN, the amount of your renewal fee, and your expiration date. If you cannot find your renewal notice, you can still renew online using your VIN and driver's license number, or you can contact the Georgia Department of Revenue to request that another notice be mailed to you.

Proof of insurance is required for tag renewal in Georgia. You must show that your vehicle has valid liability insurance coverage that meets Georgia's minimum requirements. Georgia requires all vehicle owners to carry liability insurance with minimum limits of $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for injury to multiple people, and $25,000 for property damage. Your proof of insurance can be a printed document from your insurance company, an insurance card, or an electronic copy shown on your phone. The insurance must be active and current on the date you renew your tag. If your insurance has lapsed or expired, you must obtain new insurance before renewing your tag.

A valid form of identification is needed to verify that you are the registered owner or an authorized person renewing the tag. An acceptable ID includes your Georgia driver's license, a passport, a military ID, or another government-issued photo identification. If someone other than the registered owner is renewing the tag on your behalf, that person will need their own valid ID.

If your vehicle is financed through a loan or lease, your lienholder (the bank or finance company) may require notification of your renewal. In some cases, the lienholder's name appears on your registration document. Check your registration or loan documents to see if there are any special requirements for your financed vehicle.

Your vehicle registration document provides important details such as your vehicle's make, model, year, and color. This document is not always required to renew online, but it is helpful to have available in case questions arise about your vehicle or registration.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your renewal notice, proof of current insurance, and a valid ID before you start the renewal process. If you cannot find your renewal notice, use your VIN and driver's license number to renew online or contact the Georgia Department of Revenue by phone.

Understanding Renewal Fees and Payment Options

The cost of renewing your Georgia license tag varies based on several factors, including your vehicle's age, weight, and whether you are adding any special options to your tag. The basic renewal fee is set by the Georgia Department of Revenue and is listed on your renewal notice. This fee is the amount charged by the state itself and does not include any county taxes or optional add-ons.

Many Georgia counties charge an additional county ad valorem tax on vehicle renewals. This is a property tax based on the assessed value of your vehicle. The ad valorem tax varies significantly by county, with some counties charging very little and others charging several hundred dollars depending on your vehicle's value. Your total renewal cost on your notice includes both the state renewal fee and any county taxes that apply to your vehicle. If you move to a different county or your vehicle's assessed value changes, your renewal cost may change.

Some vehicles qualify for a reduced fee or exemption from ad valorem taxes. For example, vehicles that are very old, vehicles owned by certain military veterans, and vehicles with alternative fuel systems may have lower renewal costs. Your renewal notice will show whether any special tax treatment applies to your vehicle.

Payment methods accepted for tag renewal include credit cards, debit cards, and electronic checks (ACH transfers). When renewing online, you will enter your payment information directly into the secure Georgia Department of Revenue website. When renewing in person at a tag office, you can typically pay with cash, check, credit card, or debit card, depending on the location. When
