Send Money to Inmates Online Information Guide

Understanding Inmate Money Services and How They Work

Sending money to someone in jail or prison involves using specialized services that connect family members and friends with incarcerated individuals. These services exist because most correctional facilities do not allow direct cash transfers or personal bank accounts. Instead, inmates typically access money through commissary accounts, trust accounts, or phone accounts that their supporters fund remotely.

The basic process works like this: you identify which correctional facility holds the inmate, find an authorized money transfer service that works with that facility, provide the inmate's information and your payment details, and send the funds. The money then appears in the inmate's account within a certain timeframe, depending on the service and facility. Different prisons and jails partner with different companies, so availability varies by location.

Money sent to inmates serves several purposes. Commissary accounts let inmates purchase items from the prison store, including hygiene products, snacks, writing supplies, and clothing. Trust accounts may cover costs like phone calls, visitation, legal fees, or medical copays. Some facilities use phone accounts specifically for long-distance calls home. Understanding which account type applies to your situation helps you send money to the right place.

Several major companies operate in this space nationally. GTL (Global Tel*Link), Securus, JPay, Pigeonly, and Inmateaid serve different regions and facilities. Some facilities use multiple providers, while others use just one. Your job is to find which service your specific facility uses.

Practical Takeaway: Before sending any money, contact the correctional facility directly to learn which money transfer service they use. Call the facility's business office or check their website. This single step prevents sending money to the wrong service and wasting your payment.

Finding the Right Money Transfer Service for Your Facility

Each correctional facility contracts with specific money transfer providers. A prison in Texas may use a different company than one in California. Even within the same state, different facilities may partner with different services. This means you cannot assume which service to use—you must verify it for your situation.

The most direct method is calling the correctional facility. Most have a business office or inmate services department that answers questions about money transfers. When you call, have the inmate's full name, booking number or inmate number, and facility name ready. Ask specifically which money transfer service the facility uses and whether they have a phone number or website for that service. Write down the information they provide.

If calling proves difficult, many facilities post this information on their websites. Look for pages titled "Inmate Services," "Sending Money," "Commissary," or "How to Send Funds." Some facilities provide links directly to their authorized money transfer providers. State and county websites sometimes maintain lists of facilities and their associated services.

A few resources maintain databases of which services work with which facilities. The Prison Policy Initiative and some legal aid organizations compile this information, though updates may lag behind actual changes. Use these as a starting point, but always confirm with the facility directly.

Each money transfer service operates slightly differently regarding payment methods, fees, and processing times. Some accept credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, or cash payments at retail locations. Fees range from about $2 to $15 per transaction, depending on the service and payment method. Processing times vary from minutes to several business days. Knowing these details before you send money helps you choose the method that works best for your situation.

Practical Takeaway: Create a simple document with the facility name, inmate number, money transfer service name, service website or phone number, and acceptable payment methods. Refer to this sheet whenever you send money, and update it if the facility changes providers.

Setting Up an Account and Sending Your First Transfer

Once you identify the correct money transfer service, setting up an account involves providing basic information. Most services require your name, address, phone number, and email address. Some ask for an ID number such as a driver's license number. This step typically takes 5 to 10 minutes and can usually be done online or over the phone.

You will then need to provide the inmate's information. This typically includes their full legal name, inmate identification number, and the facility name. Getting the inmate number correct is crucial—sending money under a wrong number means it goes to the wrong person's account. If you do not have the inmate number, call the facility and ask for it, or ask the inmate during a phone call.

Payment methods vary by service. Most major providers accept credit cards and debit cards online. Some accept bank transfers or direct payment from your checking account. A few allow you to pay in cash at retail locations like Walmart or grocery stores, though this typically costs extra. Choose whichever method is most convenient for you, and understand that different methods may have different fees.

Before confirming your transfer, review all the details: inmate name, inmate number, facility, amount, and your payment method. Many errors occur because of typos in the inmate's name or number. Take 30 seconds to double-check everything matches what you have on file.

After you send money, the service provides a confirmation. Some services send email confirmations immediately; others provide a reference number on screen. Save this information. If a problem occurs, you will need the confirmation number to track the transfer or request a refund.

Most services post money to the inmate's account within one to three business days if you use standard processing. Some offer faster options for an additional fee, processing within hours. Funds typically appear in the commissary or trust account the inmate can access, though they may not be immediately spendable if the facility has policies about new deposits.

Practical Takeaway: Before making your first transfer, have the inmate confirm their full legal name and inmate number during a call or visit. Even small differences in spelling can cause transfers to fail. Save your confirmation email or reference number for your records.

Understanding Fees, Limits, and Restrictions

Money transfer services charge fees that can significantly impact how much of your money actually reaches the inmate. Fees typically range from $1.95 to $15 per transaction, depending on the service and payment method chosen. A $50 transfer might cost $2.50 to $5 extra, while a $200 transfer could include a $10 to $15 fee. Over time, these fees add up substantially.

Some services charge flat fees regardless of amount. Others use percentage-based fees where larger amounts cost proportionally more. A few offer discounted fees if you set up recurring transfers or use specific payment methods. Understanding the fee structure of your facility's service helps you budget more accurately.

Most services place limits on how much you can send at one time or per month. Individual transaction limits often range from $50 to $500 per transfer. Monthly limits might be anywhere from $300 to $5,000 or more. These limits exist partly as facility policy and partly as anti-fraud measures. If you need to send more than the limit allows, you may need to make multiple transfers.

Restrictions also apply to what the inmate can purchase with their account. Different facilities have different commissary rules. Some items are typically prohibited: weapons, drugs, alcohol, excessive amounts of certain foods, or items that could pose security risks. The inmate's facility handbook or the commissary menu explains what can and cannot be purchased.

Some money transfer services maintain their own restrictions on how funds can be used. For instance, some services that handle phone account funds restrict those funds to phone calls only. Money in a commissary account usually has fewer restrictions than money in a trust account. The service or facility will specify these rules.

Refund policies vary among services. If you send money to the wrong inmate or facility by mistake, some services process refunds within 5 to 10 business days; others may take longer or charge a refund fee. A few services have more restrictive policies. Read the terms before sending money so you understand what happens if an error occurs.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate the total cost including fees before sending money. If your facility's service charges a $5 fee per $50 transfer, sending $100 in two transfers costs $10 total, while sending $100 in one transfer costs $5. Choose the most cost-effective method for your situation.
