Replace Weed Wacker String Step by Step Guide

Understanding Weed Wacker String Basics

A weed wacker, also called a string trimmer or weed eater, uses a thin nylon string that spins at high speeds to cut grass and weeds along edges and in tight spaces. The string, often called trimmer line or cutting head string, comes in various thicknesses and materials. Understanding what you're working with helps you make better choices when it's time to replace it.

The cutting string typically measures between 0.065 inches and 0.155 inches in diameter. Thicker string works better on tougher vegetation like thick weeds and brush, while thinner string suits regular grass trimming. Most residential weed wackers use string in the 0.080 to 0.095-inch range. The string material is usually made from nylon polymers that withstand the rotational stress and friction of cutting.

Inside your weed wacker is a spool or head that holds the string wound tightly. As you trim, the string gradually wears down from hitting hard surfaces like rocks, concrete, and wood. When the string gets too short or breaks, your trimmer becomes less effective. Some weed wackers use a bump-feed system where tapping the head on the ground automatically feeds out new string. Others require manual replacement of the entire spool or bobbin.

The string eventually frays, wears thin, and breaks into pieces. You might notice your trimmer isn't cutting as cleanly, or the string snaps mid-use. These are signs you need fresh string. Knowing your trimmer's specific model and compatible string size prevents buying the wrong replacement.

Practical Takeaway: Before you begin, locate your trimmer's model number (usually on the housing or handle) and check the owner's manual to find the exact string diameter your machine needs. Write down this information for future reference.

Gathering Tools and Materials You'll Need

Replacing weed wacker string doesn't require expensive or specialized tools. Most of what you need is probably already in your home. Having everything organized before you start makes the process faster and more frustrating-free. The main material you need is the replacement string itself, available at any hardware store, garden center, or online retailer.

String comes in several packaging options. You can buy spools with 20 to 100 feet of string wrapped around a cardboard or plastic base. Pre-wound replacement heads come ready to install on your specific trimmer model. Some people buy string by the pound in bulk, which costs less per foot but requires you to wind it yourself. For most homeowners, buying a pre-wound head for your specific model is the easiest option.

Beyond string, gather these basic items: a pair of work gloves to protect your hands from the rough nylon and any sharp edges on the head, a screwdriver (usually Phillips head, but check your manual) to open the trimmer head if needed, needle-nose pliers for holding or manipulating string, scissors or a utility knife for cutting string cleanly, and a small container or tray to catch any small parts that might fall. A flashlight or headlamp helps you see inside the trimmer head clearly, especially if the opening is tight or shadowy.

You'll also want to have your owner's manual nearby. This document contains the specific steps for your model, diagrams showing which direction to wind string, and information about the exact string diameter needed. If you don't have the original manual, many manufacturers post PDF versions on their websites. Search for your trimmer model and "manual" to find the document online.

Practical Takeaway: Create a small workspace with all your materials arranged in front of you. Having the manual open next to you prevents mistakes and reduces the time spent troubleshooting during replacement.

Preparing Your Weed Wacker for String Replacement

Safety comes first when working on any powered equipment. Before you touch the trimmer head, disconnect the power source completely. For gas-powered models, allow the engine to cool for several minutes, turn off the fuel valve if your model has one, and remove the spark plug wire to ensure the engine cannot accidentally start. For electric corded models, unplug the machine from the outlet. For battery-powered models, remove the battery pack completely.

Place your weed wacker on a clean, flat work surface where you have plenty of room to maneuver. A garage floor, workbench, or large table works well. Protect your surface from any debris or spilled string by laying down newspaper or an old towel. Make sure the work area has good lighting so you can see small parts and threading details clearly.

Examine the trimmer head closely before opening it. Look for any visible damage, cracks, or broken pieces. Take a photo with your phone before you disassemble anything—this visual reference helps you reassemble correctly. Most trimmer heads have a central cap or cover that unscrews or unclips. Some older models have a bolt in the center. The method depends entirely on your model, so the manual's diagram is invaluable here.

Check that the trimmer head isn't stuck or corroded from age and weather exposure. If it feels stuck, don't force it. Spray a small amount of penetrating oil around the seam where the cap meets the head and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. This loosens corrosion and makes disassembly easier without damaging the threads. Wipe away excess oil with a rag before proceeding.

Practical Takeaway: Before you start disassembling, spend two minutes reviewing your manual's diagram of the head and taking photos. This preparation prevents confusion and frustration during reassembly.

Removing Old String and Opening the Head

Once you've prepared safely, carefully remove the outer cap or cover of the trimmer head. Most caps unscrew counterclockwise, though some push straight out or unclip. Use steady, even pressure rather than jerking or twisting hard, as the plastic can crack. If you're using a screwdriver, make sure it fits the screw properly to avoid stripping the head. Keep the cap and any small screws in a safe place where they won't roll away.

Inside the head, you'll see the spool or bobbin that holds the string. On bump-feed models, this is usually a removable spool that pulls straight out. On other models, the spool may be permanently attached, and you're simply adding or replacing string that winds around it. Examine the internal structure carefully. There are often small springs, washers, or other parts that can fall out easily. The manual diagram shows you exactly how these pieces fit together.

Begin removing the old string. On some models, you unwind it by hand. On others, you may need to cut the string in several places and pull out sections. A pair of needle-nose pliers helps grab and pull stubborn pieces. Remove every bit of old string from the spool and the internal chamber. Old string fragments can jam the mechanism or interfere with new string feeding correctly.

While the head is open, inspect the internal chamber for dirt, grass buildup, and debris. Wipe it clean with a dry rag or paper towel. Compressed grass and dirt can interfere with string feeding and cause jams. Pay special attention to the small openings where string exits the head and the edges of the spool. A dry brush or old toothbrush helps dislodge stubborn debris. Once the chamber is clean and all old string is removed, you're ready to install the replacement string.

Practical Takeaway: Take your time removing old string and don't rush. Leaving fragments behind causes problems later. A clean chamber makes new string feed smoothly and prevents future jams.

Installing New String Correctly

With the head open and clean, consult your manual for the exact threading pattern. Most bump-feed heads use one or two string lengths. For a single-string setup, you might need 15 to 30 feet of string depending on the spool size. For dual-string setups, you need roughly double that amount. The manual specifies the exact length and shows diagrams of how string wraps around the spool.

If you're using a pre-wound replacement head, installation is simple: remove the old head from the trimmer shaft (usually by unbolting it), slide the new head onto the shaft, and tighten the bolt securely. Make sure the head is centered
