Remove Google Chrome From Your Mac Guide

Understanding Google Chrome and Why You Might Want to Remove It

Google Chrome is a web browser developed by Google that allows you to view websites on your Mac computer. A browser is software that retrieves and displays web pages when you type in a web address or click a link. Chrome has been one of the most widely used browsers since its launch in 2008, with market research showing it holds roughly 63% of the global browser market share as of 2024.

People choose to remove Chrome from their Macs for various reasons. Some users prefer alternative browsers like Safari, Firefox, or Opera. Others want to reduce the number of applications running on their computer to improve performance and storage space. Chrome is known to consume significant amounts of RAM (memory) — sometimes using 500 MB to 1 GB or more when multiple tabs are open. For Mac users with limited storage or older machines, this resource consumption can slow down other tasks. Additionally, some people remove Chrome for privacy reasons, as Google collects browsing data to build user profiles for targeted advertising. Others simply no longer use the browser and want a cleaner computer.

Before removing Chrome, consider whether you use it regularly or have bookmarks and settings you want to preserve. Unlike some applications, uninstalling Chrome is a straightforward process that does not require special technical knowledge. The removal process takes just a few minutes and uses only the tools built into your Mac operating system.

Practical Takeaway: Identify your reason for removing Chrome — whether it is storage concerns, performance issues, privacy preferences, or simply switching to another browser — so you can decide whether to back up your bookmarks and settings before uninstalling.

Preparing to Remove Chrome: Backing Up Your Data

Before removing Google Chrome, you should back up any important data stored within the browser. Chrome stores bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, autofill information, and extensions within your user profile. If you plan to switch to another browser or continue using Chrome on another device, losing this information would be inconvenient.

To back up your Chrome bookmarks, open Chrome and click the three vertical lines (menu icon) in the upper right corner of the browser window. Select "Bookmarks" from the dropdown menu, then click "Bookmark Manager." This opens a new tab showing all your saved bookmarks organized by folder. Click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner of the Bookmark Manager and select "Export bookmarks." Your computer will prompt you to choose a location to save the file — typically your Downloads folder or Desktop. Chrome exports bookmarks as an HTML file that you can import into another browser later. This process takes less than one minute.

For saved passwords, you can view them by opening Chrome's Settings (the three-line menu icon, then "Settings"). Click "Passwords" on the left sidebar to see your saved login credentials. While Chrome does not have a built-in password export feature, you can manually note important passwords or use Chrome's export function through your Google Account. If you use Google's password management system, your passwords sync to your Google Account, so they remain accessible even after removing Chrome.

Extensions are small programs that add features to Chrome. If you have installed custom extensions, you should note which ones you use so you can reinstall them in your new browser if needed. Visit the three-line menu, select "More Tools," then "Extensions" to see your list.

Practical Takeaway: Export your bookmarks to an HTML file and take note of installed extensions before removing Chrome, so you preserve your browsing preferences and can recreate your setup in another browser.

Step-by-Step Process for Removing Chrome from Your Mac

Removing Chrome from a Mac is simpler than removing applications from Windows computers. Apple's macOS does not require you to use a special uninstall program for most applications. Instead, you can remove Chrome by dragging it to the Trash, which is roughly equivalent to the Recycle Bin on Windows.

The first step is to close Google Chrome completely. If Chrome is running in the background, the removal process may not work properly. Click the Chrome window and press Command + Q (the keyboard shortcut for quitting an application on Mac), or click "Chrome" in the menu bar at the top and select "Quit Chrome." Wait a few seconds to ensure the application has fully closed.

Next, open the Finder application. Finder is the default file browser on Mac — it looks like a smiling face icon in your dock (the row of application icons at the bottom of your screen). If you do not see Finder in the dock, click the Apple logo in the top left corner and select "Finder" from the dropdown menu. Once Finder is open, click "Applications" in the left sidebar under Favorites. This shows a folder containing all applications installed on your Mac.

Scroll through the Applications folder until you locate "Google Chrome." The applications are typically listed in alphabetical order, so Chrome should appear near the top of the list. Right-click (or control-click) on the Google Chrome icon and select "Move to Trash" from the context menu that appears. Alternatively, you can click once on Google Chrome to select it, then press Command + Delete. Either method accomplishes the same result.

After moving Chrome to the Trash, you should empty the Trash to permanently remove the application from your computer. Click the Trash icon in the dock (it appears as a small garbage can) to open it. At the top of the Trash window, click "Empty" (or "Empty Trash" depending on your macOS version). macOS will ask you to confirm that you want to permanently delete the items. Click "Empty" again to confirm. This process permanently removes Chrome from your Mac.

Practical Takeaway: Close Chrome completely before removal, locate it in the Applications folder via Finder, move it to Trash, then empty the Trash to permanently uninstall the browser.

Removing Chrome User Data and Cache Files

When you move Google Chrome to the Trash as described above, the main application is removed, but Chrome still maintains a user profile folder on your Mac containing cached data, browsing history, and settings. The size of this folder typically ranges from 100 MB to several gigabytes, depending on how long you have used Chrome and how many websites you have visited. If you want to completely remove all traces of Chrome from your computer, you should also delete this user profile folder.

To access Chrome's user data folder, you must show hidden files on your Mac, since this folder is hidden by default. Open Finder and press Command + Shift + Period (the period key). This keyboard shortcut temporarily shows hidden files and folders on your Mac. Alternatively, click "Finder" in the menu bar, select "Settings," click the "Advanced" tab, and check the box that says "Show all filename extensions" — though this method shows file extensions rather than hidden folders.

With hidden files now visible, navigate to your user home directory. In Finder, click your username in the sidebar under Favorites, or press Command + Shift + H. Once in your home folder, navigate to Library, then Google. Inside the Google folder, you will find a "Chrome" folder. This folder contains your user profiles, cache, cookies, and all browsing data. Delete the entire Chrome folder by right-clicking it and selecting "Move to Trash." The folder size varies by user, but removing it typically frees up 1 GB to 5 GB of storage space.

You may also want to remove Chrome from your Applications Support folder. Navigate to Users > [Your Username] > Library > Application Support, then delete any folders related to Chrome or Google that are not needed by other Google applications like Google Drive or Google Docs. Be careful not to delete support files for other applications you still use.

After deleting these folders, empty the Trash again to ensure all Chrome-related files are permanently removed from your Mac.

Practical Takeaway: Use the Command + Shift + Period keyboard shortcut to show hidden files, navigate to your Library folder, and delete the Chrome folder to remove all cached data and user profiles associated with the browser.

Removing Chrome from Your Mac's System Settings and Login Items

Google Chrome sometimes adds itself to your Mac's login items, which are applications that automatically launch when you restart your computer. Even after uninstalling Chrome, it may remain in your login settings, causing your Mac to attempt to open it every time you restart. Removing Chrome from login items prevents this behavior and keeps your startup process clean and efficient.
