Learn How to Set Up a GoFundMe Campaign

Understanding GoFundMe and How It Works

GoFundMe is an online fundraising platform where people create campaigns to raise money for personal causes, medical expenses, education, community projects, and emergencies. Founded in 2010, the platform has processed billions of dollars in donations across millions of campaigns. Unlike traditional loans or grants, GoFundMe campaigns rely on voluntary contributions from family, friends, and strangers who choose to donate based on the campaign's story and cause.

The platform operates on a straightforward model: you create a campaign describing your need, set a fundraising goal, and share it with your network. Donors visit your campaign page, read your story, and decide whether to contribute. GoFundMe takes a processing fee (typically around 2.2% plus transaction fees) from each donation, but you receive the remaining funds. The money goes directly to your designated bank account, usually within several business days after donation.

GoFundMe campaigns can remain active indefinitely, meaning you're not locked into a specific timeline. Some campaigns reach their goals in weeks, while others run for months or longer. The platform reports that the most successful campaigns typically combine a compelling personal story with clear communication about the funds' purpose. Medical campaigns, for example, account for a significant portion of fundraising on the platform, with many exceeding their initial goals through persistent sharing.

Understanding the basics helps you approach your campaign strategically. The platform provides various campaign categories including medical, emergency, education, nonprofit, memorial, and community. Each category functions the same way mechanically, but donors may search by category, so selecting the right one matters for visibility. Additionally, GoFundMe offers optional services like verified badges and promoted placement, though these aren't required to run a successful campaign.

Practical Takeaway: Before starting, spend time exploring existing campaigns in your category on the GoFundMe website to see how successful fundraisers structure their pages, what language they use, and how much detail they provide about their needs.

Preparing Your Campaign Before Launch

Preparation determines much of your campaign's success. Before writing a single word on your campaign page, gather essential materials and information. Start by collecting clear, high-quality photos or videos of yourself or the situation your campaign addresses. Research shows that campaigns with images or video receive significantly more donations than text-only campaigns. If you're fundraising for a medical condition, medical bills or documentation can strengthen your credibility, though you shouldn't share sensitive personal health information publicly.

Next, define your fundraising goal realistically. Review actual costs associated with your need—whether that's medical bills, tuition, emergency housing, or travel. Many unsuccessful campaigns set goals that don't match their stated needs, which raises questions for potential donors. Break down your costs transparently: if you need $5,000 for medical treatment, explain whether that covers surgery ($3,000), post-operative care ($1,200), and travel to a treatment center ($800). Specific numbers build trust more effectively than round figures.

Identify your audience and communication strategy. Who will you share your campaign with? Family members? Your church or community organization? Social media followers? Professional networks? Different audiences respond to different messaging. Someone sharing with close friends might emphasize personal connection, while someone reaching out to a broader community might focus on community impact. Create a list of people you'll contact directly—research indicates that personal outreach generates more donations than simply posting a link online.

Prepare backup documentation and personal references. Have ready any documents that support your story: hospital bills for medical campaigns, acceptance letters for education campaigns, contractor estimates for home repairs. While these don't need to be public, being able to reference them if donors have questions strengthens your position. Consider identifying someone who can speak to your character and situation if needed—this might be a physician, social worker, community leader, or family member.

Write multiple versions of your story at different lengths. You'll need a one-paragraph summary for social media sharing, a medium version for initial emails, and a detailed version for your campaign page. This preparation means you won't be scrambling to rewrite your message repeatedly.

Practical Takeaway: Create a spreadsheet listing your specific costs, and gather or photograph supporting documentation. Draft your story in three versions: 50 words, 200 words, and 500 words. This preparation typically takes a few hours but prevents delays when you're ready to launch.

Creating Your Campaign Page

Your campaign page is your primary communication tool with potential donors. Start by choosing an appropriate title that's clear, specific, and honest about your need. Effective titles include: "Help Sarah Pay for Cancer Treatment," "Emergency Funds Needed After House Fire," or "College Tuition Fund for First-Generation Student." Avoid vague titles like "Help Us Out" or "Emergency Fund"—donors need to understand the purpose immediately.

The campaign description is where you tell your story. Write in first person and be authentic. Share relevant background: Who are you? What happened? Why do you need funding? What will the money be used for? How will it change your situation? Studies of successful campaigns show that donors respond to specific human details and emotional honesty, not exaggeration. Explain any obstacles you've already addressed—have you researched other funding sources? Taken on extra work? Made personal sacrifices? Showing that you're actively working toward solutions, not just asking for help, increases donor confidence.

Organize your description clearly using short paragraphs and line breaks. Dense walls of text discourage reading. Include these sections: your story, specific costs, how funds will be used, and what happens next. For medical campaigns, you might include: brief background about the diagnosis, why you need treatment (if not obvious), where you'll receive treatment, total cost breakdown, and your timeline. For education campaigns: your academic background, your goals, what you've already done to fund your education, and specific costs.

Choose your campaign category carefully. GoFundMe offers specific categories, and donors often browse by category. Select the one that most accurately describes your need. The category affects how potential donors discover your campaign through platform searches. You'll also set your fundraising goal at this stage—remember that you can withdraw funds before reaching your goal, and any amount helps even if you don't reach the target.

Add photos and, if possible, a short video. GoFundMe allows multiple images and a personal video message. A brief video—just 30 seconds to two minutes—where you speak directly about your situation significantly increases donations. The video doesn't need professional quality; a phone-recorded message in good lighting is sufficient. For sensitive situations, you might use photos instead of video.

Write a compelling opening paragraph that will appear when people see your campaign preview. This paragraph should hook readers immediately: "I'm a single mother of two facing $40,000 in emergency medical bills after a car accident" is stronger than "I need help with some bills." The opening determines whether potential donors will read further.

Practical Takeaway: Draft your campaign page in a word processor first, ask 2-3 trusted people to read it and provide feedback, then transfer it to GoFundMe. This prevents errors and ensures your message is clear before it's public.

Sharing and Promoting Your Campaign

Creating your campaign is only the first step; sharing it determines your success. GoFundMe doesn't automatically promote campaigns to potential donors. You must actively share your campaign link with your network and potentially beyond. Begin with people you know: email or text your personal network with a message about your campaign, include the link, and explain specifically why their support matters. Personal outreach generates significantly more donations than cold social media posts.

Share across social media platforms you use regularly: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, or others. Adapt your message for each platform's tone and audience. A Facebook post to family and friends might be personal and emotional, while a LinkedIn post about a professional development campaign might focus on goals and impact. Post multiple times—research shows that repeated sharing increases visibility without appearing spammy if you space posts over days or weeks.

Consider reaching out to relevant organizations and groups: churches, service organizations, professional associations, alumni groups, or community organizations connected to your cause. Many groups share member requests with their communities. Send a professional email explaining your situation and asking if they'd consider sharing your campaign. Some organizations have specific processes for this; others may share your link in newsletters or social media.

Write individual messages to key contacts rather than using a mass message. People respond better to personalized communication that explains why you're reaching out to them specifically. For example: "I know your family has experience with this condition, and I thought you
