Learn How to Adjust Hunter Sprinkler Heads Correctly

Understanding Hunter Sprinkler Head Types and Their Functions

Hunter Industries manufactures several different sprinkler head models, each designed for specific watering applications in residential and commercial landscapes. Understanding which type you have is the first step toward making proper adjustments. The most common residential models include spray heads, rotary heads, and drip irrigation emitters, each with distinct operating characteristics and adjustment mechanisms.

Spray heads deliver water in a fixed or adjustable fan pattern and typically cover smaller areas, ranging from 4 to 15 feet in radius. These heads work well for flower beds, foundation plantings, and small lawn sections. Rotary heads, sometimes called rotors, spray water in a rotating stream and can cover larger areas, typically 30 to 60 feet in diameter depending on the model. They operate more slowly than spray heads, allowing water to soak deeper into the soil. Drip irrigation emitters deliver water slowly and directly to plant roots, making them ideal for gardens, shrubs, and water conservation efforts.

Hunter's product line includes models such as the I-20, I-40, MP Rotator, and various specialty heads. Each model features different adjustment options for spray radius, arc (the degree of coverage), and flow rate. Before attempting any adjustments, identify your specific model by looking at the top of the sprinkler head or consulting your irrigation system documentation. Most Hunter heads have the model number printed or embossed on the body.

Practical takeaway: Locate your sprinkler head model number and look up its specifications in the Hunter manual or online documentation. This reference material will show you exactly which adjustment screws or mechanisms apply to your particular head and what results to expect from each adjustment.

How to Adjust Spray Pattern and Arc on Hunter Heads

The spray pattern adjustment controls the width of coverage for spray heads and determines whether water spreads in a full circle, half circle, or quarter circle pattern. This adjustment is critical for preventing water waste on sidewalks, driveways, or areas outside your landscaping. Most Hunter spray heads use a small screw or dial located on top of the sprinkler head to control this setting.

To adjust the arc on a Hunter spray head, locate the adjustment screw typically positioned near the center or edge of the top cover. Using a flat-head screwdriver, turn the screw clockwise to reduce the arc and counterclockwise to increase it. The adjustment range varies by model but commonly allows adjustments from as narrow as 25 degrees up to a full 360-degree circle. Make quarter-turn adjustments and test the spray pattern by running the zone briefly to observe the results.

When adjusting arcs, consider your landscape layout carefully. A 90-degree pattern covers one-quarter of a circle and works well in corners or against fences. A 180-degree pattern covers one-half of a circle and suits island plantings or areas along walls. Full 360-degree coverage applies water in all directions and fits open lawn spaces. Many systems require multiple heads with different arc settings to achieve complete coverage without overlap or missed spots.

Common mistakes include making oversized adjustments and not testing between changes. Adjust in small increments—typically 15 to 30 degrees at a time—then observe the actual spray pattern during operation. Water pressure and soil slope can affect how the spray appears, so observe from multiple angles and times of day when possible.

Practical takeaway: Before making adjustments, sketch your landscape layout and identify which areas each sprinkler head should water. Mark the current spray arc with chalk or flags, adjust gradually, test the new pattern, and only proceed if coverage improves without creating dry spots or excessive runoff.

Adjusting Spray Radius and Distance on Hunter Sprinkler Heads

The spray radius adjustment controls how far water travels from the sprinkler head—a critical setting for ensuring coverage reaches all plants while avoiding wasted water on hardscapes. Hunter heads use different mechanisms for radius adjustment depending on the model. Some feature a pressure adjustment screw, while others use a nozzle selection system or a built-in distance dial.

For Hunter I-20 and similar spray head models, locate the radius adjustment screw, typically a small slot on the top of the head. Turning this screw clockwise generally decreases the spray distance, while counterclockwise increases it. The adjustment range typically allows modifications from 50 percent to 100 percent of the maximum distance. This means if your head is rated for a 15-foot radius, you can adjust it to spray as little as 7.5 feet or maintain the full 15-foot distance.

Rotary heads like the MP Rotator use a different approach. These heads feature a nozzle that can be removed and replaced with different models to change the spray radius. Hunter offers MP Rotator nozzles in various ranges, typically 12 feet, 15 feet, 20 feet, 25 feet, and 30 feet. If your rotary head isn't reaching far enough, you may need to replace the nozzle with a longer-distance model. This involves unscrewing the nozzle (usually turning counterclockwise) and installing a new one of the desired range.

When adjusting radius, measure the actual distance water travels by placing cups or containers at various distances from the head during operation. This real-world testing reveals whether adjustments match your expectations. Factors like water pressure, wind conditions, and nozzle wear affect actual spray distance, sometimes causing variation from manufacturer specifications.

Practical takeaway: Measure your landscape zones to determine the ideal spray distance, then adjust or replace nozzles as needed. Test adjustments by observing actual spray patterns during normal watering, measuring water depth in containers, and checking for complete coverage of planted areas.

Adjusting Spray Head Height and Angle

Proper sprinkler head elevation and angle significantly impact coverage uniformity and water efficiency. Hunter sprinkler heads typically mount on risers—vertical pipes that extend the head above ground level. Standard risers range from 2 to 12 inches in height, with some systems using taller commercial risers. The appropriate height depends on your landscape features and plant coverage.

When grass or plants grow taller than your sprinkler head, they block the spray pattern and create dry spots. This is one of the most common reasons for inadequate watering. If coverage problems develop over time, vegetation growth is often the culprit. The solution involves either adjusting plant growth around the heads through pruning and landscape maintenance, or installing taller risers. Most residential systems use 4-inch risers, but upgrading to 6-inch or even 12-inch risers can resolve obstruction issues.

To adjust riser height, you must shut off the water supply and dig around the sprinkler head to access the connection point where the riser joins the underground supply line. Unscrew the old riser by turning counterclockwise, then screw on a new riser of the desired height by turning clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten, as this can strip the threads. Once the new riser is installed, adjust the sprinkler head angle if needed.

Head angle adjustment applies primarily to rotary heads and some spray models that feature a tilt screw. This screw, typically located at the base of the head, allows tilting the spray pattern upward or downward. Slight tilting accommodates sloped terrain, preventing water runoff downhill while ensuring adequate penetration on uphill areas. Most adjustments range from -5 degrees (tilted down) to +5 degrees (tilted up). Use a level to check the original angle, make small tilt adjustments, and test the spray pattern.

Practical takeaway: Inspect each sprinkler head to ensure grass and plants don't obstruct the spray. If vegetation blocks coverage, either trim back growth or install taller risers. On sloped terrain, check head angle and adjust tilting as needed to ensure water reaches all areas without excessive runoff.

Seasonal and Pressure-Related Adjustments

Water pressure fluctuations throughout the year and across different times of day affect how Hunter sprinkler heads perform. Higher pressure increases spray distance and can cause misting or overspray, while lower pressure reduces coverage area. Understanding pressure-related issues helps explain why your system may perform differently in summer versus winter or morning versus afternoon.

Hunter spray heads typically operate optimally at 35 to 55 pounds per square inch (PSI) of pressure. If your system operates outside this range, spray performance suffers
