Learn How Kohl's Capital One Credit Cards Work

Understanding Kohl's Capital One Credit Card Basics

Kohl's offers two main credit card options through Capital One: the Kohl's Card and the Kohl's Visa Card. Both cards are designed specifically for shopping at Kohl's stores and online. The Kohl's Card works only at Kohl's locations and through their website, while the Kohl's Visa Card can be used anywhere Visa is accepted, giving cardholders more flexibility for purchases outside of Kohl's.

Capital One manages these accounts and handles billing, customer service, and credit reporting. When you open either card, your account information goes through Capital One's systems. This means your payment history, credit limit, and account activity are tracked and reported by Capital One to the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

The cards come with different features based on which version you choose. Both cards offer rewards in the form of Kohl's Cash, which is a promotional currency that can be used for future purchases at Kohl's. The specific rewards rates and benefits differ between the two card types. Understanding these differences helps you decide which card might work better for your shopping habits.

These are store-branded credit cards, meaning they're issued by Capital One but branded with the Kohl's name and logo. This is different from a general-purpose credit card like a Visa or Mastercard that you might use anywhere. Store cards typically have their own rules about where you can use them and what rewards or benefits they offer.

Practical Takeaway: Kohl's Cards are specialized shopping cards managed by Capital One. The Kohl's Card is for Kohl's only, while the Kohl's Visa Card works at Kohl's and anywhere else that accepts Visa. Your account activity reports to major credit bureaus and affects your credit history.

How Kohl's Cash Rewards Work on These Cards

Kohl's Cash is the primary reward you earn when using either Kohl's credit card. This is not actual cash but rather store credit that can be used to purchase items at Kohl's. For every dollar you spend on either card, you earn Kohl's Cash at a specific rate. Cardholders typically earn 1% Kohl's Cash on most purchases, though promotional periods sometimes offer higher earning rates of 2%, 3%, or even higher percentages.

The earning structure works like this: if you spend $100 using your Kohl's Card, you earn $1 in Kohl's Cash (at the standard 1% rate). This Kohl's Cash accumulates in your account and appears in your rewards balance. You cannot transfer Kohl's Cash to a bank account or use it outside of Kohl's. It exists only within the Kohl's ecosystem and must be spent on merchandise, services, or gift cards sold by Kohl's.

Kohl's frequently runs promotional campaigns where cardholders earn extra Kohl's Cash on specific purchase amounts. For example, Kohl's might offer "Earn $15 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 you spend" during holiday shopping seasons. These promotions are time-limited and vary throughout the year. Non-cardholders shopping at Kohl's do not receive Kohl's Cash rewards; this benefit applies only to Kohl's Card holders.

Kohl's Cash typically expires after a certain period, usually about six months from when it was earned. You receive notifications when your Kohl's Cash is about to expire, giving you advance notice to use your rewards before they disappear. The exact expiration timeline may vary depending on when the cash was earned and current Kohl's policies. Reading your statement and card communications helps you track when to use your rewards.

Practical Takeaway: Kohl's Cash is store credit that accumulates based on your spending (typically 1% per dollar). You must use it at Kohl's within the expiration period, usually around six months. Higher earning rates are available during promotional periods.

Annual Percentage Rates and Interest Charges on Kohl's Cards

Like all credit cards, Kohl's Cards charged through Capital One have an Annual Percentage Rate (APR), which is the yearly cost of borrowing money if you don't pay your full balance by the due date. The specific APR you receive depends on your creditworthiness, which Capital One evaluates during the account opening process. APRs for Kohl's Cards generally range from around 19% to 27%, though this can vary based on individual circumstances and current market conditions.

If you carry a balance from month to month, Capital One applies interest charges to that balance using your card's APR. Here's a practical example: if you have a $500 balance on your Kohl's Card with a 24% APR and you only make minimum payments, Capital One calculates interest monthly. That $500 would accrue approximately $10 in interest the first month. This interest gets added to your balance, and the next month's interest calculation includes both the original balance and the accumulated interest.

Capital One provides your card's specific APR in your welcome packet and on your monthly statement. You can also contact Capital One directly to ask about your current APR. Some cards may offer an introductory APR rate for a limited time after opening the account, meaning you might have a lower or 0% APR period before the regular APR kicks in. These promotional rates vary and should be clearly stated in your card agreement.

To avoid interest charges entirely, you should pay your full statement balance by the due date each month. If you pay only the minimum payment, interest accumulates on the remaining balance. Most credit experts suggest paying more than the minimum to reduce interest costs and pay off debt faster. Your monthly statement clearly shows the minimum payment due, the full balance, and how much interest was charged that month.

Practical Takeaway: Kohl's Card APRs typically range from 19% to 27% and vary by person. Interest only applies if you don't pay your full balance monthly. Paying the entire statement balance by the due date eliminates interest charges entirely.

Fees Associated with Kohl's Capital One Cards

Kohl's Cards have no annual fee, meaning you won't be charged simply for having the card. This is a significant advantage compared to some other retail credit cards or premium cards that charge yearly membership fees. You can keep your Kohl's Card account open indefinitely without incurring an annual fee, even if you don't use the card regularly.

However, other fees may apply depending on how you use the card. A late payment fee applies if you don't pay at least the minimum payment by the due date. As of recent policy information, late fees can range from $25 to $39 depending on the amount and your account history. If your payment is significantly late (typically 30+ days), additional fees and penalty APR increases may apply.

A returned payment fee may apply if a check you use to pay your bill bounces or if an electronic payment fails due to insufficient funds. This fee is typically around $25 and is separate from any late payment fees. To avoid this, ensure you have sufficient funds in your bank account before making payments.

If you exceed your credit limit, Capital One may charge an over-the-limit fee, though federal regulations have made these less common. Some accounts may allow you to go over your limit for an additional fee, while others may decline transactions that would push you over your limit to prevent this fee entirely. You can find out your specific credit limit and whether over-limit fees apply by reviewing your card agreement or contacting Capital One.

Foreign transaction fees may apply if you use your Kohl's Visa Card internationally. These fees are typically around 1% to 3% of the transaction amount and cover the cost of processing international purchases. If you plan to use your card while traveling outside the United States, check with Capital One about their specific foreign transaction fees.

Practical Takeaway: No annual fee applies to Kohl's Cards. Late payment fees ($25-$39), returned payment fees ($25), and possible foreign transaction fees (1-3%) may apply depending on your usage. Paying on time avoids most fees.
