Learn About Senior Discounts at Ski Resorts

Understanding Senior Discount Programs at Ski Resorts

Ski resorts across North America offer reduced-price lift tickets and season passes for older adults, typically starting at age 60, 62, or 65 depending on the resort. These programs represent one of the most straightforward ways seniors can reduce the cost of winter sports activities. Unlike many discount programs that require extensive documentation or enrollment, senior ski discounts usually require only proof of age at the ticket window or during online purchase.

The structure of senior discounts varies significantly between resorts. Some facilities offer a flat percentage reduction—commonly 25% to 50% off regular lift ticket prices—while others set fixed prices that decrease as a skier ages. For example, a resort might charge $85 for a regular adult day pass but offer a senior ticket for $55. The discount percentage often increases for older age groups. A person aged 60 might receive a 25% reduction, while someone aged 70 or older might receive 40% off or more.

Major resort chains and independent ski areas both participate in senior pricing. Vail Resorts, which operates resorts like Breckenridge, Keystone, and Vail in Colorado, offers discounts starting at age 65. Boyne Resorts, operating multiple mountains in the Midwest, begins senior pricing at age 60. Independent resorts often set their own age thresholds and discount percentages, meaning a small regional resort in Vermont might have different terms than a large resort in Utah.

The financial impact of these discounts can be substantial over a season. A skier who visits a resort 20 times per season and saves $30 per visit through a senior discount saves $600 annually. Over five winters, that amounts to $3,000 in savings without changing skiing habits or frequency.

Practical takeaway: Before purchasing any lift tickets, contact the resort directly or check their website to learn the exact age threshold for senior discounts at that specific location, as these thresholds vary between resorts.

Types of Senior Discounts: Day Passes, Multi-Day, and Season Passes

Ski resorts typically offer senior discounts across multiple ticket types, allowing different skiing preferences to benefit from reduced prices. The most common option is the single-day lift ticket, which provides access to the entire resort for one day. Senior day passes usually cost 25% to 45% less than full-price adult tickets. As of 2023, regular adult day passes at major resorts range from $75 to $165 depending on the mountain, time of season, and demand. Senior prices for the same day pass typically fall between $45 and $110.

Multi-day passes, which cover three to seven consecutive or non-consecutive ski days, also feature senior pricing. These passes generally offer better per-day value than single-day tickets for both regular and senior prices. A resort might charge $85 per day for a regular adult buying daily, but offer a 5-day pass for $375 (about $75 per day). A senior on the same multi-day pass might pay $280, representing an additional savings compared to buying five senior single-day tickets separately.

Season passes represent the most significant investment and offer the largest total savings for frequent skiers. Many resorts offer senior season passes at discounts ranging from 30% to 50% off regular season pass prices. A resort with a $1,200 regular season pass might offer a senior pass for $700 to $840. For someone who skis 30 or more days per season, the season pass typically pays for itself and provides unlimited skiing for the remainder of the winter.

Some resorts also offer spring pricing, night skiing discounts, and beginner packages that incorporate senior pricing. Spring tickets, valid during the final weeks of the season, are often discounted for everyone but may have additional senior reductions. Night skiing passes, available at resorts with lighted runs, sometimes cost less than daytime passes and can feature senior pricing as well.

The timing of purchase can affect final cost. Some resorts offer early-season discounts on season passes when purchased before October, and these early-purchase discounts may stack with senior pricing. Others offer discounts for purchasing online in advance rather than at the ticket window on the day of skiing.

Practical takeaway: Calculate your expected number of skiing days for the season. If you plan to ski 15 or more days, compare the cost of a senior season pass against paying for individual days. At most resorts, frequent skiers save money with a season pass, even before considering any mid-season price increases for day tickets.

How to Find and Verify Discount Information at Specific Resorts

Each ski resort maintains its own pricing structure and senior discount policy, making it important to verify information directly rather than assuming one resort's terms apply to another. The most reliable source is the resort's official website, which typically displays pricing under sections labeled "Lift Tickets," "Season Passes," or "Rates and Hours." Most resorts now allow visitors to view current prices online and sometimes compare them across different dates and ticket types.

To find discount information on a resort website, look for links or tabs that mention seniors, ages, or pricing categories. Many resorts list discount percentages or specific ages in a pricing table that breaks down costs by age group: children (ages 4-12), teens (13-17), adults (18-64), and seniors (65+). Some resorts use different age brackets, so reading the specific definitions matters.

When information isn't clearly displayed online, calling the resort's ticket office directly provides accurate details. Most resorts maintain toll-free phone numbers and ticket office hours, often 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time during the ski season. Staff can answer questions about the exact senior discount age, current prices for specific dates, and policies for purchasing online versus at the window.

Regional ski resort associations and tourism websites can also point toward discount information. The National Ski Areas Association, which represents most major U.S. resorts, publishes information about member resorts, though it doesn't list all individual discount policies. State tourism boards often maintain directories of resorts with basic information about discounts and amenities.

Social media platforms, particularly resort Facebook pages, sometimes include pricing updates and information. However, these sources may not reflect the most current prices, so using them as a starting point and then confirming with the official website or phone number remains the safest approach.

Documentation requirements for claiming a senior discount are straightforward. Most resorts request a government-issued photo ID showing birth date. Valid forms include driver's licenses, passports, and state ID cards. Some resorts accept AARP membership cards as additional verification. No extensive paperwork, prior registration, or special cards are required at most facilities.

Practical takeaway: Collect the websites and phone numbers for the three or four resorts you visit most frequently. Bookmark their pricing pages to check prices and discount information during planning, and save phone numbers in your contacts for questions about specific dates or ticket types.

Comparing Senior Discount Offers Across Different Mountains

The landscape of senior pricing varies considerably across ski resorts, making comparison worthwhile if you have flexibility in choosing where to ski. Understanding these differences can reveal which mountains offer the best value for seniors in your region or travel area.

Starting age for senior discounts ranges from 60 to 70 across North America. Most major resorts use 65 as the threshold, aligning with traditional retirement age. However, some resorts—particularly independent mountains and those in competitive regional markets—begin discounts at 60. A few premium resorts start at 70. This means a 63-year-old skier might find senior pricing at one regional mountain but must pay full adult price at a nearby premium resort.

Discount depth also varies. Research from ski resort comparison websites suggests that senior discounts typically range from 20% to 50% off regular prices. The largest resorts, which attract more visitors overall, sometimes offer smaller percentage discounts (around 25-30%) but in exchange offer extensive terrain and facilities. Smaller regional mountains, particularly those in less densely populated areas, sometimes offer deeper discounts (40-50%) to attract senior visitors. A major Colorado resort might offer 25% off, while a smaller mountain in New Mexico might offer 45% off.

Multi-mountain passes create another layer of comparison. Epic Pass, offered by Vail Resorts, provides season-long access to 34 mountains in North America and Europe for one price. The senior Epic
