How To Measure a Dresser Before Buying

Understanding the Importance of Measuring Before Purchase

Buying a dresser without proper measurements is one of the most common mistakes people make when furnishing a bedroom. According to furniture retailers, approximately 30-40% of returned furniture pieces are sent back due to size issues. When a dresser doesn't fit your space as expected, you face inconvenience, return shipping costs, and wasted time. Measuring beforehand takes about 15 minutes but can save you hundreds of dollars and significant frustration.

A dresser is typically one of the larger pieces of bedroom furniture, often serving as both storage and a focal point in the room's design. Unlike smaller furniture items, a dresser that's too large can make a bedroom feel cramped and obstruct traffic flow. One that's too small may not provide the storage you need or look proportionally wrong in the space. The difference between a 36-inch and a 48-inch dresser may seem minor in a showroom, but in a bedroom with limited space, those 12 inches can determine whether the piece actually works in your home.

Beyond just fitting through doorways and windows, accurate measurements help you understand how a dresser will interact with other furniture, windows, doors, and architectural features like closets or radiators. This information allows you to make informed decisions before committing to a purchase. Taking time to measure also gives you the opportunity to think through your needs rather than making an impulse decision in a store or online.

Takeaway: Spend 15 minutes measuring your space now to avoid spending hours dealing with returns, redecorating around an ill-fitting piece, or purchasing furniture that doesn't meet your actual needs.

Measuring Your Bedroom Space Accurately

Start by measuring your bedroom with a tape measure that's at least 25 feet long. Standard tape measures work, but a 25-foot or longer measuring tape makes the job easier and reduces measurement errors. Take measurements from wall to wall in multiple locations—ideally at least three different spots per wall. Walls aren't always perfectly straight, and measuring in several places reveals any irregularities that could affect furniture placement.

Use a notepad or smartphone notes app to record measurements as you take them. Writing down numbers immediately prevents confusion later when you're comparing measurements to furniture specifications. Take your time and measure twice for accuracy. For example, if you're measuring the wall where the dresser will go, measure the entire wall length, then measure the distance from the corner to any windows, doors, vents, or electrical outlets that might affect placement.

Document the location of permanent fixtures that matter for dresser placement:

• Door swings and their clearance radius
• Windows and their sill heights
• Heating vents, air return ducts, and radiators
• Light switches, electrical outlets, and cable outlets
• Closet doors and their swing pattern
• Existing furniture and the pathways between rooms

Many people forget that doors open into space. A door that swings inward can collide with a dresser or reduce how far the door opens. If you have a bedroom with limited space, a dresser placed near the door might block the entrance or make the door unusable. Take time to understand how your door swings and account for this when planning dresser placement.

Takeaway: Measure your entire bedroom and note all permanent fixtures, not just the wall where you plan to place the dresser, so you understand the full constraints of your space.

Measuring Doorways and Hallways for Delivery

Before you fall in love with a dresser online or in a store, determine whether it can physically enter your home. A dresser measuring 48 inches wide means nothing if your bedroom doorway is only 32 inches wide. Many dressers ship as complete pieces and cannot be disassembled for moving. Measuring doorways and hallways is critical—and many people overlook this until delivery day, when they discover the furniture won't fit.

Measure the width, height, and diagonal depth of every doorway between your home's entrance and your bedroom. Start at the front door, then measure any hallways, staircases, and turning areas the furniture must pass through. Don't just measure the door frame width; account for door frames, trim, and baseboards that might reduce the actual opening. For example, a standard interior doorway might measure 36 inches wide in the frame, but with trim installed, the actual usable opening could be 34 inches or less.

Stairwells require special attention. If your bedroom is upstairs, the dresser must navigate the stairwell. Measure the stairwell width at its narrowest point and calculate the diagonal measurement of the stairwell space. The diagonal measurement matters because furniture often tilts as it's carried up stairs. A dresser that's 48 inches wide and 32 inches tall has a diagonal measurement of about 56 inches, which must fit within your stairwell's dimensions.

Create a simple floor plan sketch showing doorway widths and hallway widths as the dresser travels from entrance to bedroom. Some homes have narrow hallways or older construction with smaller doorways. A bedroom in a Victorian home, for instance, might have doorways only 28-30 inches wide, which eliminates most standard dresser sizes without disassembly.

Takeaway: Measure every doorway and passageway the dresser must travel through before purchase, not after—this single step prevents the most expensive purchasing mistakes.

Taking Accurate Measurements of Dresser Dimensions

Dressers come in many sizes. The most common standard widths are 36, 42, 48, 54, and 60 inches, though manufacturers produce many variations. When you find a dresser you're considering, look up its exact specifications from the manufacturer or retailer. These specifications typically include width, depth, and height measurements. Write these measurements down alongside your room measurements to compare them directly.

Understanding each measurement matters:

• Width: The left-to-right dimension, which determines if it fits through doorways and how much wall space it uses
• Depth: The front-to-back dimension, which determines how far it sticks into the room and affects traffic flow
• Height: The bottom-to-top dimension, which affects how it looks in the room and whether you can see over it to windows or wall decorations

Standard bedroom dressers typically have depths ranging from 16 to 20 inches. This depth affects how much the dresser protrudes into your bedroom. In a small bedroom, a 20-inch deep dresser can significantly reduce available floor space. Measure the wall where you plan to place the dresser and subtract the dresser depth from that measurement to see how much floor space remains.

Height varies considerably by style. A typical 5-drawer dresser stands around 48-52 inches tall, while a 6-drawer or chest-on-chest style might reach 60-70 inches. A very tall dresser in a room with a low ceiling might feel oppressive and block natural light from windows. Conversely, a short dresser (around 28-32 inches) might look out of proportion in a large bedroom. Consider your ceiling height—most residential bedrooms have 8-foot ceilings, which is usually fine for standard dressers, but older homes sometimes have lower ceilings.

Takeaway: Don't assume sizes from a photo; always look up official manufacturer specifications and physically write down those measurements next to your room measurements for direct comparison.

Considering Clearance, Traffic Flow, and Practical Space

Knowing a dresser will physically fit doesn't mean it's appropriately sized for your space. A dresser that barely squeezes through your bedroom door might create an awkward living situation. Think about how you'll actually use the room. You need space to walk, open dresser drawers fully, and move around furniture comfortably.

Plan for adequate clearance around furniture. Standard interior design guidance suggests allowing at least 18-24 inches of walkway space between large furniture pieces. If you place a dresser against a wall with only 24 inches to the next piece of furniture or door, opening all the drawers fully becomes difficult or impossible. Pull out a drawer
