How To Get To Yellowstone National Park

Understanding Yellowstone's Location and Regional Geography

Yellowstone National Park spans across three states: Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The park covers approximately 3,472 square miles, making it larger than Rhode Island. The main entrance areas are located in different regions, which affects how you'll plan your route. The South Entrance sits near the town of Jackson, Wyoming. The North Entrance connects through Gardiner, Montana. The West Entrance runs through West Yellowstone, Montana. The East Entrance accesses the park from Cody, Wyoming. The Northeast Entrance is the least-used entry point, accessed through Cooke City, Montana.

Understanding which entrance makes sense for your trip depends on where you're traveling from and what areas of the park you want to visit. The park sits at high elevation, ranging from about 5,300 feet to over 11,000 feet above sea level. This elevation affects weather, driving conditions, and how your body feels during your visit. Winter weather can close roads and entrances from November through April, depending on snow conditions. Spring and fall bring unpredictable weather with rapid temperature changes.

The nearest major airports include Bozeman Gallatin Field Airport (about 90 miles north), Jackson Hole Airport (about 60 miles south), and Billings Logan International Airport (about 130 miles northeast). Smaller regional airports exist in West Yellowstone and Island Park, Idaho, though they have limited flight options. Many visitors fly into one of the major airports, rent a vehicle, and drive to the park.

Practical takeaway: Research which park entrance is closest to your starting point and note the current road conditions and seasonal closures before planning your route. Check the National Park Service website for real-time information about which roads are open.

Driving Routes From Major Cities

From Salt Lake City, Utah, the drive to Yellowstone's South Entrance takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours, covering about 390 miles. You'll head north on I-15, then connect to US Highway 30 or continue toward Jackson, Wyoming. This route offers relatively straightforward highway driving through scenic terrain. During winter months, I-15 near the Utah-Idaho border can experience heavy snow, so checking weather and road reports is important before departing.

From Denver, Colorado, the journey is longer—approximately 7.5 to 8 hours covering roughly 560 miles. You'll travel north on I-25 toward Fort Collins, then take US Highway 34 or other northern routes toward the park. This route passes through the Colorado high country and can be affected by snow from September through May. Summer travel on this route is generally straightforward, though traffic around Boulder and Fort Collins can slow your progress.

From Seattle, Washington, the drive covers approximately 840 miles and takes about 12.5 hours of driving time. You'll head southeast through Oregon and Idaho, connecting to highways that lead to the West Entrance near West Yellowstone. This long drive often requires an overnight stop, with many travelers staying in Boise, Idaho or central Oregon communities.

From Billings, Montana, travelers can reach the Northeast Entrance in about 3 hours (roughly 130 miles) or the North Entrance in about 4 hours (160 miles). This is the shortest drive from a major Montana city. The route to the Northeast Entrance follows US Highway 212, which is scenic but can close in winter due to snow on Beartooth Pass.

From Rapid City, South Dakota (home to Mount Rushmore), the drive to the North Entrance takes approximately 6 hours covering about 400 miles. You'll travel west through South Dakota and into Montana via US Highway 212 or similar routes.

Practical takeaway: Use online mapping tools to calculate your specific route and current driving times. Call ahead or check the park's website to confirm all highways on your planned route are open, especially if traveling in shoulder seasons (spring or fall).

Air Travel and Ground Transportation Options

Flying into the region and renting a vehicle is a common approach for visitors traveling from distant locations. Bozeman Gallatin Field Airport (BZN) receives flights from major carriers and sits about 90 miles north of the North Entrance. Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is approximately 60 miles south of the South Entrance and offers good connectivity to major hubs. Billings Logan International Airport (BIL) is about 130 miles northeast of the North Entrance and typically offers competitive airfare pricing.

Car rental agencies operate at all these airports. Rental rates vary seasonally, with peak summer prices significantly higher than off-season rates. When renting a vehicle, consider whether you need a full-size vehicle for unpaved roads or if a standard car will suffice. Most main park roads are paved, but some secondary roads are gravel. Four-wheel drive isn't typically necessary in summer, but winter travel may require additional traction or chains.

Some visitors use ride-sharing services or shuttle buses from nearby towns, though this requires more planning and coordination. West Yellowstone, Gardiner, and Cooke City all have shuttle services connecting to park entrances. These options work well if you prefer not to drive but limit your flexibility for exploring different park areas during your stay.

Commercial bus tours operate from gateway towns and include transportation, accommodations, and guided experiences as package deals. Tour companies like Xanterra Travel Collection and various regional operators offer multi-day packages. These tours simplify logistics but provide less flexibility than independent travel with a rental vehicle.

Recreational vehicle (RV) rentals are popular for Yellowstone visitors. RVs range from small campervans to large motorhomes. Rental companies operate in Billings, Bozeman, and other gateway cities. RV travel requires advance reservations at campgrounds, as spaces fill quickly during peak season. Some visitors bring their own RVs or trailers, which requires towing capacity and familiarity with backing into campsites.

Practical takeaway: Compare total costs of flying and renting a car versus driving from your location. If flying, reserve your rental car well in advance for peak summer travel (June through August), as vehicle availability becomes limited.

Timing Your Visit and Seasonal Considerations

Summer (June through August) represents peak visiting season. Temperatures range from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, dropping to 40-50 degrees at night. All park roads are typically open, and all facilities operate at full capacity. However, this season brings the most crowded conditions, with parking areas filling by mid-morning at popular attractions like Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring. Summer requires advance bookings for accommodations, often made months ahead.

Spring (April through May) offers moderate crowds and warming temperatures ranging from 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Some roads remain closed due to snow, particularly the Northeast Entrance road and higher elevation passes. Spring brings wildflowers, active waterfalls from snowmelt, and active wildlife as animals emerge from winter. Roads typically open progressively through May, with the Northeast Entrance usually remaining closed until late May or early June.

Fall (September through October) features comfortable temperatures (50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit), fewer crowds than summer, and dramatic changes in vegetation. Elk begin their rutting season in September, making this an excellent time for wildlife viewing. Some facilities begin closing in late September. Snow can arrive in late September at higher elevations, though most roads remain open through October.

Winter (November through April) transforms Yellowstone into a quieter landscape. Most roads close to regular vehicles, though some remain open to wheeled traffic and snowmobiles. Winter temperatures drop well below freezing, often reaching negative numbers. Only the North Entrance and Northeast Entrance roads typically stay open for wheeled vehicles during winter. Snowmobile travel and specialized snow coach tours provide winter access to park interior. Winter lodging is limited and must be booked far in advance.

Weather can change rapidly in Yellowstone, particularly in spring and fall. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Elevation changes between entrances and park interior mean temperatures can vary 15-20 degrees between locations on the same day. Visitors should pack layers and weather-appropriate clothing regardless of season.

Practical takeaway: If you prefer smaller crowds and comfortable weather, visit in September or early October. If traveling during peak summer, arrive at popular attractions early (before 9 a.m.) and book accommodations 6-12 months in
