Free Guide to Updating Java on Your Computer

What Is Java and Why Update It?

Java is a programming language and platform that runs on computers around the world. It was created by Sun Microsystems in 1995 and is now maintained by Oracle Corporation. Java powers many applications and websites you use every day, from banking systems to streaming services to productivity software. When you visit certain websites or use specific programs, Java may run in the background to make those services work properly.

Java comes in different versions. As of 2024, Java 21 is the latest long-term support version, meaning Oracle will provide updates and security fixes for many years. Previous versions include Java 17, Java 11, and Java 8. Each new version includes improvements to speed, security, and how the software handles tasks.

Updating Java is important for several reasons. Security vulnerabilities are discovered regularly in older versions. These are weaknesses that harmful actors could potentially exploit. Oracle releases security patches through updates to fix these problems. Running outdated Java versions on your computer puts your system at risk. Additionally, newer versions often run faster and more efficiently than older ones. Software developers also create programs that may require newer Java versions to function properly.

Many people don't realize Java is on their computer because it runs quietly in the background. You might have Java installed if you use certain banking applications, video conferencing software, or specialized work programs. Some users intentionally install Java to run specific applications they need.

Practical takeaway: Check whether Java is actually on your computer before attempting an update. You can determine this by visiting java.com and using their detection tool, which will tell you your current Java version or indicate that Java is not installed.

How to Check Your Current Java Version

Before updating Java, you need to know which version you currently have installed. This process differs slightly depending on whether you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, but the general approach is the same on all systems.

On Windows computers, you can check your Java version through the Control Panel. Open the Control Panel, then select "Programs" or "Programs and Features." Look for entries that say "Java" or "Java Runtime Environment" in the list of installed programs. The version number appears next to the Java entry. Alternatively, you can open the Command Prompt (search for "cmd" in your Windows search bar) and type the command java -version then press Enter. Your Java version information will display in the window.

Mac users can find their Java version by opening the Terminal application (located in Applications > Utilities). Type java -version and press Enter. The version details will appear immediately. If you see an error message saying the command is not recognized, Java is likely not installed on your Mac.

Linux users follow a similar process. Open a terminal window and type java -version to see your current version.

You can also visit the official Java website at java.com. On their homepage, you'll find a section that says "Verify Java and get the latest version." Click on this area and the website will automatically detect your Java version and operating system. This online method works the same way regardless of your computer type.

The detection tools will show you information like "Java 8 Update 391" or "Java 17.0.6." The first number indicates the main version (8, 17, 21, etc.). The numbers after "Update" show how many security patches have been applied to that version.

Practical takeaway: Write down your current Java version before proceeding. This information helps you confirm the update was successful and is useful if you need to contact technical support later.

Obtaining the Latest Java Version

Java can be obtained from several sources, but the most reliable location is the official Oracle website at java.com or oracle.com/java. Oracle is the company that maintains and distributes Java, so their website contains the authentic, unmodified software.

Visit java.com in your web browser. You'll see a prominent button or link to obtain Java. The website will automatically detect your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux) and your computer's processor type (32-bit or 64-bit). Most modern computers use 64-bit systems. The website will recommend the appropriate version for your setup.

You have options when obtaining Java. Oracle offers Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which allows you to run Java applications on your computer. They also offer Java Development Kit (JDK), which includes additional tools for people who want to create Java programs. Most regular computer users need the JRE, not the JDK. The JRE is smaller and contains everything necessary to run Java applications.

Before obtaining the new version, consider whether you want to keep your old version installed. Some older software might only work with older Java versions. However, modern versions of Java are generally backwards compatible, meaning newer versions can run programs designed for older versions. You can have multiple Java versions on your computer simultaneously if needed, though this takes additional storage space.

The file you obtain will have a name like "jre-21_windows-x64.exe" (on Windows) or "jre-21_osx-x64_bin.dmg" (on Mac). These files are typically 100-200 megabytes in size. Save the file to a location you can find easily, such as your Downloads folder.

Avoid obtaining Java from unofficial websites or file-sharing services. Malicious actors sometimes create fake Java installers that contain harmful software. Obtaining from java.com or oracle.com ensures you get genuine software.

Practical takeaway: Before obtaining the new version, consider your internet connection speed. The download typically takes 2-10 minutes on a standard home internet connection. If your connection is very slow, plan accordingly and avoid interrupting the process.

Installing the Updated Java Version on Your Computer

Once you have the Java installation file, the actual installation process is straightforward on all operating systems. Windows and Mac use graphical installers that guide you through each step.

On Windows, locate the file you obtained (typically in your Downloads folder) and double-click it. A window will open asking whether you want to allow the program to make changes to your computer. Click "Yes" to proceed. The Java Setup window will open. Review the license agreement, which outlines the terms under which you can use Java. Click the "Accept License Agreement" button or checkbox. Then click "Install." The installer will copy files to your computer and may take 2-5 minutes. Once complete, click "Close" to finish.

On Mac, open the installation file (which typically has a .dmg extension). A window will appear showing a Java icon and an Applications folder. Drag the Java icon into the Applications folder. Your Mac will copy the Java files to the appropriate location. This process takes 1-3 minutes.

Linux users typically use their system's package manager to install Java rather than manual file installation. The specific commands depend on your Linux distribution. Ubuntu and Debian users would typically open a terminal and use commands like sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install openjdk-21-jre. Fedora and Red Hat users would use different commands. Detailed instructions for your specific Linux version are available on the Java website.

During installation, you may be asked about the installation location. The default location is recommended for most users. You may also see options about which components to install. The basic default selection is sufficient for most people.

Some systems may require you to restart your computer after installation completes. If prompted to do so, save your work and restart. Java will work properly after the restart.

Practical takeaway: Note the installation completion message or timestamp. After restarting your computer, verify the installation succeeded by checking your Java version again using the same method described in the previous section.

Verifying Your Update Was Successful

After installation, confirm that the update worked properly. Use the same method you used to check your version earlier. Open Command Prompt on Windows or Terminal on Mac/Linux and type java -version, or visit java.com and use their detection tool.

When you run the version check, you should see information showing the new Java version number you just installed. For example, if you installed Java 21, you should see "21.0" followed by additional numbers. If you see your old version number instead, the update may not have completed properly
