How to Unblock Contacts on Your Phone or Messaging Apps

Whether you've blocked someone by accident, changed your mind, or simply want to restore contact, unblocking is straightforward once you know where to look. The process varies slightly depending on your device type and which apps you use, but the principle is the same: you're reversing a block you've previously set.

Understanding What Blocking Does

When you block a contact, you're preventing that person from calling, texting, or reaching you through a specific app. Blocked callers typically can't see that you've read their messages, and they won't receive delivery confirmations. On most platforms, a blocked person may not immediately know they're blocked—their calls and messages simply won't get through.

Unblocking reverses this entirely. Once unblocked, that contact can reach you again just as they could before the block was set. The conversation history often remains (though this depends on your device and app), and they'll have no notification that you've unblocked them.

Unblocking on iPhone 📱

For calls and text messages:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap Phone (for calls) or Messages (for texts)
  3. Select Blocked Contacts (or Blocked Messages)
  4. Swipe left on the contact name you want to unblock
  5. Tap Unblock

Alternatively, you can unblock directly from the Contacts app: find the person, tap Edit, scroll to the bottom, and select Unblock this Caller.

For iMessage and FaceTime:

Use the same path through Settings > Messages or FaceTime > Blocked Contacts, or open a previous conversation with that person in the Messages app, tap their name at the top, and choose the unblock option.

Unblocking on Android 📱

The steps vary slightly depending on your phone manufacturer and messaging app, but the general approach is:

For native phone and SMS blocking:

  1. Open the Phone or Messages app
  2. Look for Settings or a menu icon (three dots)
  3. Find Blocked Numbers or Blocked Contacts
  4. Select the contact and choose Unblock

For third-party messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, etc.):

  1. Open the app
  2. Find the contact or open your settings
  3. Locate the Blocked Users or Blocked Contacts list
  4. Select the person and tap Unblock

The exact wording and location depend on which app you're using, so check the app's help menu if you're unsure.

Unblocking on Social Media and Email

Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter):

  • Go to your Settings
  • Find Privacy or Blocked Accounts
  • Locate the person and select Unblock

Gmail:

  • Open an email from the blocked sender (or go to Settings)
  • Click the three dots next to their name
  • Choose Unblock

Outlook and other email clients:

  • Check Settings > Junk Email > Blocked Senders and remove the address from the list

Key Differences to Know

FactorWhat It Means for You
Device-level blockingAffects calls and texts across your entire phone; usually quickest to reverse
App-level blockingOnly applies within that specific app; you may be blocked on one platform but not another
NotificationMost platforms don't notify the unblocked person; they simply regain access
Message historyUsually preserved after unblocking, though some apps may handle this differently

What to Consider Before Unblocking

Why you might unblock: You've resolved a conflict, the block was accidental, you want to reconnect, or you need access to information only that contact has.

Why you might not: The situation that led to blocking hasn't changed, unblocking might enable harassment, or you simply don't want ongoing contact.

The key variable: Your comfort level and the reason the block existed in the first place. Only you can assess whether unblocking is right for your situation.

If You Can't Find the Blocked Contacts List

If the steps above don't match your device or app:

  • Check the Help or Support section within the app itself
  • Search your device settings for "blocked" or "block"
  • Look for a Privacy or Security section
  • Contact the app's support team directly—they can walk you through the exact steps for your version

Unblocking is always reversible, so if you restore contact and later change your mind, you can block again just as easily.
