If your phone, tablet, or computer is displaying text in a language you don't understand, you can change it back to your preferred language in just a few steps. This guide covers the most common devices and explains what to expect when you make the switch.
Your device's language setting controls the text displayed in menus, buttons, notifications, and system messages. You might need to change it if:
The good news: changing your device language doesn't affect your files, photos, or personal data. It only changes how the system communicates with you.

Step 4: Tap iPhone Language (or iPad Language).
Step 5: Select your preferred language from the list.

Your device will restart briefly while applying the change. If you also want to change the regional format (how dates and numbers appear), you can adjust that in the same Language & Region menu.
Step 1: Open Settings (gear icon).
Step 2: Scroll down and tap System (or look for About Phone/Tablet, then back up to find System settings).

Step 2: Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older Macs).
Step 3: Click General in the sidebar.
Step 4: Click Language & Region.

Once you've selected a new language, your device should immediately reflect the change. Some apps may take a moment to update. Your personal files, photos, and accounts remain unchanged—only the system display language switches.
If you change your mind, simply follow these same steps to switch back to your original language. You can also set up multiple languages if you prefer to switch between them regularly.
